All software is written in Java and in order to use it you will need to download and install the Java Runtime Engine (JRE). This is also known as the Java Virtual machine (JVM).

The JRE is available (free of charge) from the Sun Developer Network. through the downloads page, where you should see something similar to this:

Take care not to download the JDK (Java Developer Kit) which is for programmers working in Java.

You only need to install the JRE once though it is wise to update periodically to ensure that you can run software developed with the latest version of the Java Standard Edition (J2SE).

Installing the JRE will enable you to run Java Applets from any web site.
