Senex Domum - Digital Images

How to search

Each image in the collection has
  • a reference number of the form SD-00-0000
  • a title
  • information about where the photograph was taken – the location
  • a number of key words or phrases

The search applies to all of these except the reference number. (If you know the reference number then enter it as the search text and select the Include ID option. If an exact match is not found then the image with an ID having the same last 4 digits will be displayed, if it exists.)

The text entered in the search input box may be

  • a word or a part of a word – all images where this text is found will be added to the display
  • a phrase (words separated by a space) – all images where this exact phrase is found will be added to the display
  • a list of words or parts of words separated by spaces – all images where one or more of these words or part-words is found will be added to the display

If the word and is part of the search text then only images where at least one word (or part-word) from each element of the search string (as delimited by one or more occurences of and) is found will be added to the display.

If the word or is part of the search text then images for which either the text before the or or the text after the or is found will be added to the display.

If more images are found than will fit on a page (as determined by Thumbnails per row and Rows per page selections then a list of pages will be displayed above the thumbnails.

You may click a displayed thumbnail to see a larger (watermarked) version and obtain more information about the image, including its actual size and when and where it was taken.

Changing the number of Thumbnails per row or Rows per page only affects subsequent searches.

A search is more likely to be successful if only the most significant part of the word or phrase is entered. This is particularly true if a word is sometimes hyphenated and sometimes not. For example, it may be better to search for 'stone' rather than 'dry stone wall' or 'dry-stone wall' or 'drystone wall'.

In addition to a reference number, title, location and key words each image is allocated to one or more categories. You may find it helpful to browse all the images in a particular category rather than to search by key word.

A list of all images in accession order is also available.
